Collaboration With All Levels of Government Required to Deal with Homelessness, Mental Health & Addiction Issues – Minister Tibollo

Thank you so much to the Honourable Michael Tibollo, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, for meeting with me this morning!
We must work together with the Provincial and Federal Governments as well as the surrounding communities to deal with mental health, addictions and homelessness. We need both short and long term strategies for prevention, continuing care, treatment and more available housing.
Thunder Bay cannot fix these problems alone.
Minister Tibollo has added more beds to the treatment centers in the smaller communities so people can be treated in their own communities, not having to endure the added stress of travelling to Thunder Bay to access services. As your Mayor, I am confident that we will get more support and resources from the government and have better collaboration with all of the surrounding communities.

Tiny House Projects Will Help People Find Affordable Housing

I had a very good conversation with John, a builder of tiny homes, about the cost of living, climate change and the environment.

Our taxes are too high and the cost of living has sky-rocketed. Many of our citizens may not be able to cover their mortgage, rent and/or fixed expenses. We need to expand our tax base beyond individual citizens so that we can protect our current services and also grow the services that we need more of.

I really hope our tiny house project will move forward quickly in Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay Public Library Mayoral Debate

Peng You

Mayoral candidate Peng You, shown during a debate at Thunder Bay Public Library on Wednesday, told CBC News that governments and agencies have to find new and better ways to deal with the drug trafficking and homelessness problems. (Matt Vis/CBC)

Peng You, who most recently has served four years as an at-large city councillor in Thunder Bay, called for more collaboration with other levels of government to address homelessness in the city.

“We only have two hands. We cannot hold too many issues or balls — we have to collaborate [with] all levels of governments, organizations, especially Indigenous agency leaders and chiefs,” he said.

“This issue is 24/7. It’s not that we have so many agencies working like this. So that’s why SOS is a very good program.”

The problems of drug trafficking and homelessness are getting worse every year, Peng You told CBC News, so governments and agencies have to find new and better ways to deal with the issues, includes heeding the call for more addiction treatment services.

Central Canada’s Resource Expo in Thunder Bay

Central Canada’s Resources Expo showcased many excellent products, equipment and services and was a great place for people to network through training sessions, exhibitions and the gala event. Thunder Bay is the hub for service and supply for mining in the northwest.

We have to attract more new private and government investors to Thunder Bay to grow our economy and support our tax base.
